kamakhya temple

Only 8 km from Guwahati railway station is located the most famous temple of Assam, the Kamakhya temple, dedicated to Goddess Sati, an incarnation of Durga, according to ancient Indian scriptures.
One of the 51 ‘peethas’ or holy spots, Kamakhya temple is also known as ‘yoni–peetha’. Every year,

Kamakhya temple in Guwahati
beginning on the 7th day of the Indian onth of Ashaad (June–July), Kamakhya temple observes a unique festival called ‘Ambubachi’ when, it is believed, the goddess menstruates. The festival draws a large number of pilgrims to temple.

The legend : Despite her husband Lord Shiva’s disapproval, Sati had gone to attend the universal ‘yajna’ organised by her father Daksha. Shiva was not invited, and was also abused by Daksha. Unable to bear the insult, Sati committed suicide. Upon hearing the news , Shiv arrived on the scene, picked up the body and began a dance of destruction. Vishnu tried to pacify Shiva: the body was cut into 51 parts. The spots on earth where each part fell was identified as ‘peetha’.

But the place where her uterus fell was not known till the god of love, Kamadeva, searched it out to rid himself of a ceratain curse of Brahma’s. Kama regains his body here. The place came to be known as ‘Kamarup’ and the presiding deity as ‘Kamakhya’ or one worshipped by Kama.

The Temple : Although little is known about the early history of the temple, the first reference to the place has been traced back to the Allahabad inscriptions of Emperor Samudragupta. The present temple was built in 1665 by King Naranarayan of Cooch Behar. The main temple has seven oval spires, each topped by three golden pitchers.

Pilgrims have to queue up at the entrance porch from where they move slowly into the semi – dark sanctum sanctorum. Images of gods and goddesses of Hindu pantheon are carved on the walls. The image of the Goddess alongwith other deities is kept on a throne. Pilgrims follow the narrow alley behind the throne to enter the sanctum sanctorum. Inside, a short flight of stairs will take you to a small subterranean pool. Pilgrims squat by the water’s edge and offer their ‘puja’ (worship). From here they can see the symbolic organ that remains covered with a red cloth.

On an ordinary day, the temple remains open from 8 am till sunset, with a couple of hours break after 1.30 pm.

The Festival : Every year, on the seventh day of Ashaad ( in 2002 it falls on 22 June), it is said that the pool containing the uterus turns red for three days. While there is no scientific backing to the event ( many believe that lots of vermillion powder is poured into the water, which then turns red). The holy water is distributed by the priests among the pilgrims.

The temple remains closed for three days thereafter and on the fourth day its doors are re-opened to pilgrims with much fanfare.

Meaning of word Kamakshi

Kamakshi is a postmanteau (composite word) consisting of Kā, Mā and Aksi: Kā is Sarasvati; Mā is Lakshmi; Aksi is her two eyes; thus Kamakshi has Sarasvati and Lakshmi as her two eyes. Sarasvati is the goddess of speech, learning, eloquence, and wisdom. Lakshmi is the goddess of auspicious sign, good fortune, prosperity, success and happiness. Saras = lake or large mass of water, pond, tank. Vati is the one abounding in or connected with water. Lakshana, Lakshmi, Laksmana are cognate words indicating auspicious sign or mark. Some say that Sarasvati and Lakshmi are products of the eyes of Kamakshi.

Kamakshi = KAma +Aksi = love + eyes = Eyes full of love.

Kamakshi of Goa and Kanchi

According to mythology, Shri Kamakshi, was brought from kaurang (Kanchi).

Kamakshi during Portuguese period

Sri Kamakshi temple was originally located in Raia in Salcete Taluka. At a later date, the deity was shifted to Shiroda village in Ponda Taluka between 1564 and 1568 due to religious persecution by alien rulers.

Kamakshi from Assam to Goa

Legend is that the deity arrived from Kamroop Kamakhya from the district of Guwahati in Assam to settle in one of the Goa temples.

Shri Kamakshi and Tripura Sundari

The goddess Kamakshi is a form of Tripura Sundari, who in turn is a form of the universal mother goddess worshipped by Hindus. While to many westerners it might seem that Kamakshi must be different from Tripura Sundari as they appear to have different names. However in the Hindu pantheon, the "names" of the deities are more descriptions than names. Tripura Sundari, like many of the forms of the supreme, has 1000 names assigned to her and these can be found in the Lalita sahasranama text. One of the names in this text is "Kamakshi" which means "She whose eyes awaken desire, or She who has beautiful eyes".

Kamakshi Amman Temple, Kanchi

Kamakshi Amman Temple is an ancient shrine dedicated to Goddess Kamakshi. Located at Kanchipuram (i.e. Kanchi). Former capital of the Pallavas, Kanchipuram lies at a distance of 75 kms from Chennai. The Kamakshi Amman temple at Kanchipuram is an ancient one and is associated with Aadi Sankaracharya of the 1st millennium CE.

Goddess Kamakshi is considered to be the representation of Shri Vidya - Shri Lalita Maha Tripurasundari - she reigns supreme in Kanchi. The image of the goddess has been carved out of a Salagrama shila and the Meru in the temple is also made of Salagrama, believed to be consecrated by sage Durvasa who was one of the renowed Shrividya upasakas. Kanchi is one of the most powerful pithas of the Devi. Many literary and musical compositions have been made on this great Devi and many devotees have been blessed by her.

Kanchi Kamakshi (Legends)

Once Sree Parvathi playfully closed the eyes of Lord Siva. Since Lord Siva has three eyes as Parvathi closed the eyes the world became dark and Parvathi's colour changed to black. She got shocked seeing the colour of her body. She then pleaded to Lord Siva to get herself free from this curse.

Lord said the black colour of Parvathi are all the sins humans Commited in this world. Then Lord said, "Parvathi you go to Bhadri. There Kathyayana Muni will be there in a hermit. You will become an infant girl child .The muni will be taking care of you. After some years with the muni you will be given a Dandam, japamala, umbrella, pot and some pulses. After getting these things you will proceed to Kasi.

In Kasi you will be there as Goddess Annapoorani and will provide food for the people suffering there from famine". Thus in Banaras Annapoorna Devi came into existance feeding all and quenching thirst and hunger.

"After twelve years staying there you will proceed and in a place where your things like japamala, dhandam pulses, umbrella and pot change there forms that place is the famous Kanchi. You will find a big Mango tree Under the tree I shall be there as a Ligam. You start doing severe penance there praying me."
So Parvathi set her journey as told by Lord Siva. She started her penance. The penance that Parvathi did was a severe one.She did abishekam with milk then offered Vilva mala to the Lingam. Keeping Parrot in her hand and standing on a needle in the midst of Panchagni She did thapas.Soon owing to the anger of Lord Siva flood surrendered the places near by areas and was about to immerge the place where Goddess was doing tapas.Goddess soon hugged the Lingam she was worshipping to protect .Soon her colour changed to her original golden colour.. Lord pleased with the penance married her and thus Kamakshi Amman and Ekampareshwarar marriage took place in the midst of devas and rishis in the presence of Lord Vishnu and Goddess lakshmi. in kanchipuram.

Thus the famous Temple of Kanchi Kamakshi came into existence. Adhi Sankara wrote Siva pancharathnam

"Nagenrakaraya thrilochanaya"

seeing the marriage scene of Lord Ekabaranathan and Goddess Kamakshi in his inner heart.

History of Kamakshi Mandir from Raia to Shiroda, Goa?

Raia (village), a small village in Goa, India, about 6 km from Margao on the way to Loutolim. Raia lies between Rachol and Loutolim and is considered significant from the view that it was the original site of the temple of Goddess Kamakshi or Shantadurga which adds to the beauty of the Shiroda village on the opposite bank of the Zuari river at Ponda.

The destruction of the original temple by the Captain of Rachol, Diogo Rodrigues saw the image of the deity being smuggled across the river by a potter who has since then been given the principal right to burn the first lamp in Kamakshi Temple at Shiroda. The lamp carrying devotees in this temple are quite a lot, which has even prompted the potters to supply the day lamps used for the festival.
